Silicon Valley Notes (2018–2024): Systems Grain and Reunion
Running water never stagnates, and a door hinge is never worm-eaten, because they are in motion. — Lüshi Chunqiu
If the years from 2014 to 2017 were a high-density frontier sprint in the Bay Area, the seven years from 2018 to 2024 were a longer oscillation along the Pacific coast—calibrating deep systems primitives against the grain of everyday life.
In the spring of 2018, I stepped away from Tubi TV just as its growth curve steepened and relocated north to the Pacific Northwest. Amid the Douglas firs and winter rain of Seattle and Oregon, I immersed myself in distributed ledgers, cryptographic protocols, OS kernel schedulers, and Rust. Two years later in 2020, as Fox Corporation acquired Tubi, fate turned another page and brought me back to my old comrades.
1. North to Seattle and the Grain of Systems
On my final Monday at Tubi in April 2018, I spent thirteen hours talking one-on-one with teammates across San Francisco and Beijing before publishing Farewell Tubi: I Told Three Stories. Moving north traded Highway 101 congestion for quiet study of Linux O(1) and CFS schedulers, WireGuard’s Noise protocol handshakes, and Elixir/Rust state machines—culminating in my GeekTime column First Course in Rust Programming and technical video series (including an episode my wife playfully guest-narrated one Sunday).
2. Reunion in the Fox Era and the 100-Engineer Milestone
When I rejoined Tubi in 2020 following the Fox acquisition, the team we had started at a few shared desks in Wangjing in 2016 had grown into a powerhouse. In March 2021 we codified our experimentation culture (“no experiment, no decision”); on July 6, 2022, the China team welcomed its 100th member; and on April 10, 2024, we celebrated Tubi’s tenth anniversary as a billion-dollar revenue streaming leader. A great engineering organization’s most enduring asset is never a trendy microservice framework, but the shared pride in craftsmanship and mutual trust that survives a decade of change.
3. Rust Takes Center Stage in Cloud Native
Between leadership responsibilities, my hands-on coding accelerated across 2023 and 2024—recording 14 videos while writing 2,000 lines of live Rust over a single 14-hour weekend, exploring AWS Smithy contract-first APIs, and refactoring distributed services into embeddable local libraries via clean trait boundaries.
On December 1, 2023, at AWS re:Invent, AWS CTO Dr. Werner Vogels stood before a massive keynote screen and placed Rust alongside cost optimization and sustainability as a foundational pillar of modern cloud architecture. Choosing a language that is strict at compile time and honest about hardware is ultimately an economic trade: paying upfront cognitive cost at compilation to eliminate tail-latency surprises and runaway cloud bills in production.
4. Winter Nights in Manhattan and Quiet Rides
A business trip to Manhattan in December 2023 offered a stark urban contrast: gridlock road rage outside the Lincoln Tunnel, followed by a quiet conversation with a Lyft driver who remarked how lonely driving had become in the era of “Quiet Preferred” ride modes—and a Seattle ride days later with an immigrant driver who spoke no English at all. Algorithms and “quiet mode” toggles smooth away transactional friction, yet they also quietly sever the simplest human warmth between strangers sharing the same physical space.
5. The Seattle Bomb-Cyclone Blackout
In late November 2024, a historic bomb cyclone toppled towering firs across greater Seattle, knocking out power and internet for days. After emptying two spoiled refrigerators and hooking a small portable generator to a mini-fridge before restocking at a packed Costco, we ate dinner by lantern light to the hum of the generator. Days later, a sunny visa trip to a cozy townhouse consulate in San Francisco completed the contrast. Both life and systems architecture require two things at once: backup generators for the storm, and the lightness to step out into the sun when the sky clears.
6. Ten Years On, at the Eve of the Agentic Wave
As Bitcoin crossed $100,000 in December 2024 and AI coding assistants began reshaping my daily workflow, my first decade on the West Coast came full circle—setting the stage for the autonomous agent revolution of 2025 and 2026.
Ten years of tempering the blade through winter and summer; when the tidal wave arrives, only a clear mind remains unshaken.
